Knowledge Gathered
This clinical experience has provided me with the opportunity to reflect on my own, desired teaching style. I observed the teacher in various settings, I have discussed with my teacher her personal teaching ethics, and I have further developed mine. I see that working in a classroom with developing students provides for an opportunity to allow for them to reach their greatest potential. Students are open to engaging and learning new concepts in various lessons when teachers can capture the attention of the students. When the attention of the students is captured, students are also less prone to misbehave.
Few students provide to the teacher behavioral challenges in the classroom where I partook in my clinical experience. For the duration of my experience I observed and captured quality insight as to why my teacher has minimal behavioral problems and how the teacher deals with negative behavior. The behavior is simply not tolerated. The teacher's demeanor in the classroom encourages student engagement. I hope to have this same demeanor in my classroom. Without voices being raised, students can become cognitively aware of the teacher's expectations in the learning environment. Having a keen grasp on the behavior in the classroom can further set up the students for success in furthering their education. Without quality behavior management, the value of one's teaching will faultier. Positive behavior can additionally be monitored in the classroom if students are engaged in the lesson, and the material being presented is above the student's frustration level. When students become frustrated with the content of the lesson, their behavior may get out of line. Additionally, I have observed if students are given unmonitored down-time, the students behavior may become negative. Keeping students on task, engaged in learning, and aware of teacher expectations allows for a learning environment that is more conducive to scholarship.
Students in the classroom where I observed are continuously drawn in during lessons to partake in group discussions. The teacher of the classroom has created a environment that supports student
learning. Students in the classroom appear to have low-affective filters. In other words, students do not hold much anxiety in the classroom and are therefore more willing to express their opinions and findings. In the beginning of the year, the teacher took time to create a classroom community where all students were welcomed as a member of the "classroom family." The teacher expressed to her students that there may be times when we do not like one another in the classroom (due to differences we may have with one another), however it is important to keep respect for each other and put the disputes that may arise behind you.
My overall the experience I was fortunate enough to have in the classroom was a positive one. I was able to build relationships with my clinical teacher, her co-workers, and the principle. I have furthered my knowledge in understanding what it is like to be a teacher. Teaching can be a difficult job, requiring much great work and effort. For example, my teacher shared with me that sometimes she stays at work
until 6pm. However, teaching is a rewarding job. Even with getting to know the students in my classroom for just two weeks, I am sad to leave them behind. However the students in the classroom have taught me many valuable lessons. The most important being that I am willing to teach students as old as
fifth grade. When I received my placement into the fifth grade class at the elementary school, I was
disappointed. For, I thought I would only ever want to work with younger elementary aged children.
Following this experience, I can conclude that I am more than willing to teach students as old as fifth grade. The classroom environment and maturity of the students was not what I expected. I understand that all classes are different, however as a teacher it is important to incorporate learning diverse teaching methods to adapt new students. Like the young children I will teach, I will never stop learning how to
grow as a teacher.
